LINGWEN(LAURA) LUO
Dr. Luo is a Bay Area-based pianist, educator, and adjudicator dedicated to performance excellence and music education. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States, Europe, and China.
BACKGROUND
Dr. Luo began studying piano at 5 years old. At age of 15, She was accepted into the highly selective and competitive Affiliated High School of Wuhan Conservatory of Music, one of the most prestigious pre-college music programs in China. Later, she earned her Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) as one of only two recipients of a full scholarship, under the tutelage of Alon Goldstein. She also holds a Master of Music in piano performance from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University Bloomington and a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Wuhan Conservatory of Music.
Throughout her studies, she trained under distinguished pianists, including Xiaofeng Zheng, Evelyne Brancart, Robert Weirich, and Alon Goldstein.
ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS
Dr. Luo has won numerous awards, including First Prize in the Liszt Memorial Hong Kong International Piano Open Competition (2012), Qintai Piano Competition (2008), and Chinese Young Artists Piano Competition (2013). She has also been recognized with the National Endeavor Fellowship from Wuhan Conservatory of Music (2014) and the Artistic Excellence Award from Indiana University (2015–2016). She has performed across the United States, Europe, and Asia in prestigious venues such as the Musikverein Concert Hall (维也纳金色大厅)in Vienna, where she appeared as a pianist in the “Dandelion” Chinese New Year Concert (2012).
TEACHING and ADJUDICATION
With over a decade of teaching experience, Dr. Luo has dedicated her career to fostering musical excellence.
As a graduate teaching assistant at UMKC Conservatory, she instructed undergraduate piano majors in both private and group settings, prepared students for keyboard proficiency exams, and contributed to curriculum development. From 2017 to 2021, she served as a piano faculty member at UMKC’s Community Music and Dance Academy, mentoring young musicians in their artistic growth and development. She was also an adjudicator for honor recital auditions and showcases, ensuring a fair and meaningful competition experience.
In 2018, she was nominated for the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Excellence in Teaching Award by UMKC Conservatory, which recognizes outstanding faculty and staff for excellence in teaching and service.
As an active member of MTNA and MTAC, she regularly serves as an adjudicator for competitions and examinations. Since 2024, she has been an evaluator for the Certificate of Merit (CM) exam, providing insightful and constructive feedback to young musicians. Passionate about fostering musical excellence, she also runs a private piano studio, offering personalized instruction tailored to each student’s artistic and technical development.
Dr. Luo has guided numerous students to success in top competitions worldwide, including Charleston International Music Competition, Paris International Music Competition, US International Open Music Competition, King’s Peak International Music Competition, Royal Mass International Music Competition, London International Music Competition, MTAC Palo Alto Branch Autumn Festival, etc.
Through her work as a performer and educator, Dr. Luo remains committedk to inspiring the next generation of musicians and sharing the beauty of piano performance with audiences worldwide.
